Quack Quack

Well is it Labor Day weekend and what better way to spend it than to attend the local 30th Annual Great Rubber Duck Race. That's right 11,000 yellow ducks jockeying to win the main event down the Blue River through the town of Breckenridge. We could have fished or hiked but this looked far more interesting ---- and it WAS.

Not only was the river full of yellow ducks, but the number of people who came out to watch was pretty astonishing.  I was not sure whether to watch the ducks or the crowd.

And the best part was that we could watch the entire race just by walking alongside the river. Watching the ducks fight for position was great. Lots of jostling and bumping, but I did not see a new fight break out.

The race was won by a bill by an unknown yellow duck who looked like all the rest of them.

The Start: All cooped up in a pen --  I feel bad for the guys in the back!  They likely placed all the elite floaters towards the front.

And they're off!  The guys in the back are at a distinct disadvantage  - even with the help of the "rakers"

Some floaters haven't even crossed the start line yet!

Some floaters are already trapped in the rocks! Others took poor options along the side of the river

The floaters start to separate near the 1/2 way mark. Have a beer on the deck, watch the race.

Floaters amass at the slow water in Dredge Pond. The crowd is getting larger and the bridges are full of people.  It is getting very exciting!

At the finish line lots of people are waiting in anticipation for the front floaters.  Most everybody had bet on a yellow duck to win, but trying to spot yours was quite hard - since they all looked the same.

The crowd rose and started to stamp their feet and cheer on the leaders..  we didn't get a picture since we were in the back -- sheesh! Some duck won -- I heard later that he was exhausted and collapsed at the finish line.

Watching the stragglers float to the finish line -- many looked quite tired!
